We Were Conditioned to Cruelty: Rumpelstiltskin

Pretty people are nice; unattractive people are bad. At least, that‘s what our fairy tales signal, and what our secret lizard brains have always thought. A prime example of pretty=good; ugly=bad is “Cinderella.” Our contemporary Walt Disney version of Cinderella portrays the stepmother and stepsisters as ugly, as grotesque. And they are mean indeed. Our pink-cheeked heroine is beautiful inside and out.

D.C. jail inmates write, design their own monthly newspaper

Allen, 37, is among about a dozen D.C. jail inmates who are writers, columnists or photographers for a monthly newspaper called Inside Scoop. Jail officials launched it a year ago as part of the facility’s education program. The jail is one of a handful of correctional facilities across the country to publish a news publication written by inmates.
